Albany Medical Center

Welcome to the Emergency Ultrasound (EUS) Fellowship Program at Albany Medical Center - EUFAC accredited.

As a mature residency training program begun in 1988, we initiated our now EUFAC accredited fellowship in 2015 with several goals in mind. Primary among these goals, was the training of capable and motivated emergency physicians to become exceptional contributors to the field of emergency ultrasound. We strive to achieve excellence in patient care, while advancing clinical standards through the employment of ultrasound technologies. The program is situated within the only academic medical center for all of northeastern New York, with a referral base encompassing 46% of the state of New York. This high patient volume and acuity have allowed for an excellent POCUS training site. We serve not only as the primary hospital for our urban center but as the referral center and only Level 1 Trauma Center for over three million people in our region. The department sees over 88,000 patients per year, with an admission rate of over 40%. This includes over 3,600 trauma activations making us the busiest trauma center in the entire state of New York. Our Pediatric Emergency Department opened in 2018, and is adjacent to but physically separate from the adult ED. This together with a departmental culture rooted in education, conspire to create an exceptional environment for collaboration and the training of our ultrasound fellows. Our institutions unique investment in simulated technologies, ultrasound machine/archiving infrastructure, and sizeable ultrasound scan center also allows for our fellows to contribute to cutting edge research.

We believe in working closely with our fellows, with a focus on bedside education, to ensure mastery of the essential aspects of emergency ultrasound, including image acquisition, scan interpretation, user education, program administration, quality assurance, and research.

With balance in mind, Albany sits on the Hudson River surrounded by four mountain ranges, the Adirondacks, Berkshires, Shawingunks, and Catskills, thus opportunities for outdoor recreation abound, from crewing/kayaking, to hiking/biking/camping. As the state capital of New York, Albany also offers a range of cultural and family activities from easily accessible Broadway shows to 30+ small museums and historic sites. Outdoor music venues include Place Theater, Tanglewood with the Boston Symphony, SPAC with the New York City Ballet/Philadelphia Orchestra, and a range of smaller concert venues like the Linda. For additional urban tastes Montreal, Boston & NY city are near by, with regular train service into NYC.

Thank you again for your interest and visiting our site. We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Beth Cadigan, MD, FACEP
