Program Description
Type of Program
We are excited you are interested in our Advanced Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship program at the Indiana University School of Medicine! We currently accept 2 AEMUS Fellows per year. We also have a separate Pediatric Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship program that accepts 1 fellow per year.
Our program is part of an amazing team of physicians, and our 10-member ultrasound division is highly active in the institution. Division members have key leadership positions in the school of medicine with active roles in medical student education and graduate medical education at one of the oldest and largest residency programs in the nation. Within the division, we have 2 research oriented faculty that each have multiple grants and are involved in cutting edge research. The institution as a whole is committed to POCUS education at all levels, and has invested more than $2 million dollars in the POCUS education programs over the past 5 years. This includes the largest single deployment of handheld ultrasound probes to six clinical departments on our Indianapolis campus.
Our department staffs 9 hospitals across the state of Indiana including our three core teaching hospitals, that have a combined annual census of over 250,000.
Fellows in our program have access to:
-their own personal handheld US probe throughout fellowship
-3 affiliated academic hospitals, each with 5-10 ultrasound machines
-9 affiliated community hospitals with integrated POCUS systems
-dedicated IU School of Medicine POCUS lab with simulation center
-multiple phantom trainers
-endovaginal OB and TEE simulation trainers
-Synchronicity middleware with EHR integration and VNA connectivity
-scanning opportunities with sonographer educators, critical care providers, anesthesiologists, and sports medicine team
We are home to an expanding research program with multiple faculty receiving grant funding from the NIH, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
We absolutely guarantee that we will provide you with a comprehensive and outstanding education in point of care ultrasound!

Ultrasound Fellowship Education
Our fellow education includes in-person and online didactics. Each month we focus on a specific topic. Most months, we will have a dedicated scanning model, so that fellows can learn in a non-time pressured environment. We find this particularly helpful for certain exams, such as scrotal ultrasound.
The division has a large half-day ultrasound conference at the end of each 4-week block and weekly half-day didactic sessions, including review sessions each Friday, where we focus on reviewing pathologic images from our pathologic image library. This allows fellows to see a wide range of pathologies that span the breadth of point of care ultrasound.
Fellows scan with all of our emergency ultrasound faculty members throughout their fellowship. Each month, 2-3 members of the division spend 2-3 hours of scanning time with the fellow.
Additional opportunities for scanning are available with our sonographers in the IUSM sonography training program, vascular sonographers from our vascular lab, in the ICU with our EM critical care fellows and in the sports medicine clinic.
Do you bill for ultrasounds?
Yes
Do you require follow up imaging for patients who get ultrasounds?
No
Other Information
We care for a diverse population at our three core training sites:
Methodist Hospital: Flagship hospital for IUH, Level 1 Trauma center
Eskenazi Hospital: County hospital, Level 1 Trauma and Burn Center
Riley Hospital for Children: Largest Children's hospital in Indiana and Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center
We have diverse faculty representation within our ultrasound division. There is a strong diversity initiative within the Department of Emergency Medicine, and the IU School of Medicine.
