Salary
Salary is variable as it is directly related to the number of clinical work hours committed. Fellows work as attendings in one of the emergency department sites within the Allegheny Health Network. Fellows and EM faculty, are employees of the USACS-AHN joint venture. USACS is a Physician owned EM management company. For company information: https://www.usacs.com/
Additional Funds
A business expense account (BEA) is provided to each fellow, providing sufficient educational funds to maximize the fellow's learning and networking opportunities throughout the fellowship year.

Other Duties
In addition to the above clinical duties, the following are the responsibilities of the ultrasound fellow:
• Bedside Scan shifts
At least one scan shift per week, averaging no less than 5 shifts per month, will be spent exclusively performing ultrasounds on available ED patients. During these shifts, the fellow will have no other patient care responsibilities and devotes the time to honing their own skills as well as educating the EM residents and students. Scan shifts may be substituted for research, administrative or teaching activities at the discretion of the EUS fellowship director.
• Ultrasound Quality Assurance
Under the direction of the EM Ultrasound Director, the fellow will be responsible for reviewing resident ultrasound scans and documentation and providing feedback to the residents on an individual basis. Ultrasound QA sessions occur weekly. A quarterly update of these findings will be presented to the residents during a 1-hour presentation at resident lectures.
• Ultrasound Teaching Activities
The fellow will participate in the annual introductory EM ultrasound course as a lecturer and as faculty for the hands-on practical session, give 4 ultrasound-related lectures to the residents throughout the year, participate in the Procedural Ultrasound Lab, and moderate 1 EM ultrasound-related journal club. At least one of the lectures presented is expected to be on an advanced or novel EUS application. The time commitment for hands-on teaching of residents and faculty is expected to be at least 20 hours per month.
• Research Activities
The fellow will be expected to design at least one research project with submission to the AGH institutional review board and initial implementation occurring before the completion of the fellowship year. In addition, the fellow will be involved in at least one other ultrasound research project. The fellow will be expected to submit at least one abstract as first author to a national meeting such as ACEP, SAEM, or AIUM.
• National Meeting Attendance
The EUS fellow will be expected to attend at least one national emergency ultrasound organization meeting during the year. The fellow will be expected to join the ACEP Emergency Ultrasound Section and will be encouraged to attend the Section Meeting at the annual ACEP meeting.
Number of Sites
All Scan shifts take place at Allegheny General Hospital. Clinical hours can occur at any one of the AHN emergency departments. Site(s) of clinical work are determined by the AHN system chair of emergency medicine prior to beginning the fellowship year.

Educational Experience
Fellow's follow a detailed curriculum, covering all core components of AEMUS, with weekly assigned reading, asynchronous lectures, and in-person didactics. Curriculum is designed to prepare the fellow for the AEMUS FPD exam.
Image Review
The fellow participates and eventually leads the weekly image review / QA sessions. In attendance at these sessions include the ultrasound director, core ultrasound faculty, and residents and students on their emergency ultrasound rotation. All the scans performed by the fellow will be reviewed in real-time by the EUS fellowship director and/or during weekly quality assurance (QA) activities.
Deadline for Fellowship Application
October 1 to meet the agreed upon offer date. However, applications will be accepted until April 1 if position is not filled on the agreed upon offer date.
