SCUF Position on the 2020-2021 Interview Season

The COVID-19 pandemic has had continued, long-standing effects on emergency departments across the country. The Society of Clinical Ultrasound Fellowships (SCUF) would like to extend support to both programs and applicants during the fall recruitment season for emergency medicine ultrasound fellowships. We stand in agreement with recommendations recently released by the Coalition for Physician Accountability to prioritize the safety of our applicants, departments, and our communities during the fall interview season.

SCUF recommends that all programs refrain from in-person interviews and actively commit to online interviews and virtual visits during the Fall 2020 emergency medicine ultrasound recruitment season for applicants seeking fellowship positions for the 2021-2022 academic year. SCUF discourages on-site visits or “second-look” opportunities due to the risks present to all parties involved, and these experiences should not be expected or required. Any applicant who is able to be present on-site should not be evaluated more favorably than those who cannot.

Applicant requests for in-person tours may be discouraged, and likely not entertained. However, pressing reasons for visiting surrounding areas may be considered on a case-by-case basis, will not necessarily include an onsite tour, and shall not be required by fellowship programs or be permitted if visitation is prohibited by institutional policy of either the applicant or host institution. Applicants who request in-person visits shall not be weighted more favorably in the rank list. Applicants choosing to travel take risk upon themselves and are expected to follow national and local guidelines with regards to social distancing and wearing masks.

Our priority is to ensure a safe recruitment environment for programs and applicants. SCUF will be monitoring the rapidly evolving situation and safety guidelines to ensure applicants and programs have the needed support and guidance for another successful application cycle.
