Is there a dedicated US month?
Yes, our EM residents do all of their preliminary education at JUMP Simulation lab. Through the course of their 3-year residency they perform scans on live patients under the direct observation of Ultrasound Faculty. In this environment they complete 200 ultrasound scans covering eFAST, Aorta, Echo, DVT, First Trimester, Renal, Biliary US. Advanced applications are incorporated as they progress in years 2 and 3 which incorporate procedures, joints, ocular, nerve blocks. There is a two-week US rotation devoted to live scanning in the ED during the 3rd year of EM training which is required for graduation.
Is there an US elective?
Yes, we have an additional two-week US elective. Residents work alongside the US director and US faculty to gain more experience. They scan with and without the Fellow and attend all academic content of the Fellowship. Most residents complete another 100-150 studies during this rotation.
