Kaweah Health, Department of Emergency Medicine

Kaweah Health is a hybrid community and academic medical center serving a diverse patient population. Our ED has a strong EM residency, is an ACS Verified Level 3 Trauma Center, an Advanced Primary Stroke Center, and an AHA STEMI receiving center with an annual volume of over 90, 000 patients. We are both EUFAC accredited and an ACEP Clinically Accredited Ultrasound Program (one of only four in CA).

Three dedicated ultrasound faculty. All EM faculty, however, are credentialed in point of care ultrasound.

All are notable in their support of EUS.

Fellows perform 1000 scans throughout the year. Their personal scans and others that they assist with, e.g. those performed by EM residents, are reviewed each week with the ultrasound faculty. Fellows teach ultrasound by leading small workshops, directing journal clubs, and lecturing to faculty, residents, advanced practice providers, and medical students

We have billed for ED ultrasounds for over ten years. This strong track record provides our fellows the opportunity to work with Vituity and Kaweah Health's revenue cycle management (coders and billers). This close working relationship positions fellows to be sought after to lead strong, revenue-enhancing ultrasound programs upon graduation.

No, patients who obtain ED ultrasounds are not required to obtain follow-up imaging. Fellows, at their discretion, have the ability to order confirmatory studies.

We are the first site in the United States to implement Sonosite Synchronicity as our middleware to enhance all of our POCUS abilities. We function are institutional-wide leaders. Our input is highly sought by other departments such as the intensive care unit and the family medicine residency as they develop their US programs.
