The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) is one of the major Harvard-affiliated teaching hospitals and is the home for the three year ACGME-accredited Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency Program.

The Emergency Department is a level I trauma center serving the Boston metropolitan area. Each year we provide care for nearly 58,000 patients, many with high-acuity medical problems. Our state-of-the-art facility is designed to meet these needs of a high-volume, acutely injured or ill patient population and strives to provide compassionate and efficient care. We have a very dynamic and successful academic faculty and training environment, and the Department is well-respected within the Medical Center. Our emergency ultrasound fellows will have the opportunity to train under five ultrasound fellowship trained faculty members as well as faculty that specializes in advanced ultrasound-guided procedures. Our Fellowship education includes training in all aspects of emergency ultrasound, with emphasis on advanced ultrasound applications, including advanced ECHO, advanced MSK and regional anesthesia, We have a weekly mage and clip review & QA, didactics and journal article review.

Fellows will give lectures and workshops to medical students, residents, and faculty. We provide a longitudinal fellowship curriculum which includes weekly lectures, hands-on sessions with faculty, educational and administrative teaching sessions. Our fellows participate in joint weekly research methodology and study design lectures provided by our BI resuscitation fellowship, we provide career mentoring, and helpwith finding that first job after fellowship.

We have a
- very structured weekly lecture schedules

- weekly structured hands-on scanning schedule for 1:1 sessions of fellows with faculty (including structured training for our 3 endocavitary probes and Trophon use)
- Materials Management team work group with Nursing/Techs support and Clinical Engineering for maintaining machines and probes and monitoring wireless data transfer, Qpath uploads, billing
- Fellow scans are reviewed weekly

The fellow is initially expected to scan about 2 four-hour blocks per week with any of the ultrasound faculty to build their initial skills.
Additional scanning with faculty trained in advanced MSK, sports medicine, procedure guidance or critical care and advanced echo is strongly encouraged.

The fellow is also expected to assist with our other educational venues, i.e. faculty, multiple resident and medical student education projects. This includes hands-on scanning sessions with faculty, ultrasound journal club, on-going research, and to give ultrasound lectures.
The fellows will have ample opportunity to teach medical students rotating at the BI ED in ultrasound, residents, faculty

We encourage the fellow to spend some time learning and teaching ultrasound internationally (i.e. in Europe) for additional advanced skill training.

We also have a high fidelity simulator with 300+ cases on abdomen, bowel, echo, pelvic, great pathology collection for education and research projects.
