Type of Program
The Harvard Emergency Ultrasound (HEUS) Fellowship program at Mass General Brigham arose from the merger of Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital Emergency Ultrasound Fellowships in 2021. Both hospitals are very well resourced and between these two major academic hospitals you can expect to care for sick, complex and unique patients while working alongside intelligent colleagues. You will become a leader in clinical ultrasound integration, teaching, and research.

Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), is a major Harvard-affiliated teaching hospital. BWH is a Level I Trauma and Burn Center with close affiliations with Dana Farber Cancer Center. The Department of Emergency Medicine cares for >60,000 ED patients per year, and the 82 bed ED includes 16 ED Observation beds.

Ultrasound Fellowship Education
The partnership of MGH and BWH leads to a vibrant intellectual environment for fellows, residents, and international scholars. US Fellows receive excellent training in performing US exams and gain an outstanding foundation in US clinical integration. On top, the program offers unparalleled opportunities for research and scholarship, fostering the academic passions of all fellows. The program uniquely prepares academically oriented fellows to become leaders in ultrasound investigation, clinical care, and ultrasound education.
The educational component of the Ultrasound Fellowship involves both a large amount of learning and teaching ultrasound.
Learning Highlights
- Lecture series covering all aspects of clinical ultrasound
- In-depth analysis of standard applications and advanced applications, with a focus on the evidence behind what we do
- Journal club, review of recent literature
- Research updates
- Image and video processing
- Scan review
• Scan shifts with faculty
• Opportunities with providers hospital-wide including echo lab, OBGYN clinic, vascular lab, IBD GI clinic, cardiothoracic OR (TEE), regional anesthesia for nerve blocks, musculoskeletal ultrasound with rheumatology and more.
• Independent scanning
• Completion and review of a minimum of 1000 scans
• International opportunities
Teaching Highlights
• Resident rotation—PGY-1 rotators for 4 week blocks
• Develop and give core lecture series to HAEMR residents
• Teaching to other services (ICU, pediatrics, neurology)
• Outside courses to community hospitals
