The University of Arizona/Banner University Medical Center Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship is a one year Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Accreditation Council (EUFAC) accredited program designed to train Emergency Medicine graduates to assume leadership roles in Emergency Ultrasound. Focused Practice Designation (FPD) is approved by ABEM and therefore is only available for those who are board-certified through ABEM (unfortunately not through ABOEM). Fellowship graduates from our program are eligible to sit for the Focused Practice Designation (FPD) examination through the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). There are three primary components to our fellowship program.

1. Education:

-Master image acquisition and interpretation skills for basic and advanced point-of-care Emergency Ultrasound applications in both adult and pediatric patients.
-Become an effective Emergency Ultrasound teacher.-Develop Emergency Ultrasound teaching portfolio.

We have a very comprehensive Emergency Ultrasound syllabus for fellows. The topics listed in the syllabus are covered over the course of fellowship year. The syllabus includes: 1) Normal and abnormal 2) Core and advanced content 3) Problem based approach and algorithms. Fellows learn the curriculum through a combination of one-on-one scanning shifts, classroom didactics, required readings, and literature review. Fellows are expected give case based presentations at every weekly conference. They work in other clinical environments such as sports medicine institute and intensive care unit to focus on specific ultrasound applications. Additionally fellows are responsible for teaching the faculty, residents and medical students, develop their own ultrasound lecture portfolio and assist with ultrasound competency assessment. Fellows will also have opportunities to attend local, regional and national ultrasound courses.

2. Administration:

-Become proficient in the critical components required to run an Emergency Ultrasound program such as image archiving, database management, quality assurance, billing and reimbursement.

Fellows participate in faculty credentialing and Emergency Ultrasound billing program. They are responsible for ultrasound equipment maintenance. They review ED Ultrasound images for quality and play an active role in image management and archiving.

3. Research:

-Become proficient in Emergency Ultrasound research study development and implementation.
-Be up to date with the current literature in the field of Point-of-Care Ultrasound.

Fellows have access to a rich clinical environment, statistical support, and faculty with NIH and DOD research funding to develop and complete one original research project. They are also expected to participate in all ongoing ultrasound research projects within the department.
