~ Michael Macias ~

Michael Macias earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, where he also completed his residency in Emergency Medicine. After residency, he completed an advanced emergency ultrasound fellowship at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.

Dr. Macias currently practices clinically at Temecula Valley Hospital. He serves as the Global Clinical Ultrasound Director for a California-based group (Emergent Medical Associates), where he manages clinical ultrasound programs for 21 different emergency departments.

Dr. Macias is also an avid educator and is the current Clinical Ultrasound Director for Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Transitional Year, and Emergency Medicine Residency Programs at Southwest Healthcare Medical Education Consortium.

He is the founder of Bread & Butter Ultrasound and Sound & Surf, which provides live comprehensive POCUS courses. He has created multiple free open access medical education sites, including The POCUS Atlas, UCSD Ultrasound, the NUEM Blog, and EM Curious. He shared the Innovation Award in 2018 from the ACEP Emergency Ultrasound Section for his work on The POCUS Atlas.

Dr. Macias also specializes in point of care ultrasound workflow development and acts as a consultant in point of care ultrasound industry, focusing on end user functionality and system integration. Dr. Macias has a strong interest in design in health care, regional anesthesia in the emergency department, and bedside echocardiography.

~ Jailyn Avila ~

Jailyn Avila completed medical school in Loma Linda, California, Residency in Chattanooga, Tennessee and an ultrasound fellowship in Lexington Kentucky. During her 4th year of medical school, Jailyn was first introduced to bedside ultrasound by Dr. Viam Dinh (creator of POCUS 101), who was at that time a senior Emergency Medicine resident.

Jailyn then matched into the Emergency Medicine residency in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where her ultrasound education was further enhanced by her ultrasound director, Dr. Ben Smith. During residency, Ben and Jailyn started working on and subsequently launched the website 5minsono.com, a website dedicated to ultrasound education.

After residency, Jailyn moved to Lexington, Kentucky where she completed an ultrasound fellowship under Dr. Matthew Dawson. During that time, Jailyn began to lecture nationally and internationally, and in 2019 she earned the 2019 ACEP Rookie Speaker of the Year Award after her debut at the ACEP scientific assembly.

In 2019, Jailyn and Ben launched www.CoreUltrasound.com, a website that combined Ben’s website (UltrasoundoftheWeek.com), Jailyn’s 5minsono website and the Ultrasound Podcast into one comprehensive point of care ultrasound website.
