The Henry Ford Health System is an 805 bed hospital located in the New Center area, near downtown Detroit. The Emergency Department (ED) is a level 1 trauma center with an annual patient census of approximately 100,000. The Emergency Medicine Residency training program is one of the oldest in the nation, which began training residents in 1976. It has a strong research program in stroke, heart failure, resuscitation, and the birthplace of Early Goal Directed Therapy (EGDT). It is affiliated with the Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSUSOM) and Michigan State College of Human Medicine (MSUCHM).

The fellow will be trained primarily by ED faculty, with additional opportunities for further training in musculoskeletal (MSK), cardiac and vascular ultrasound outside the department. We have a $5M state of the art simulation center with established ultrasound courses for residents, nurses, and medical students for further training opportunities. The fellow will also participate in medical student training at the Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSUSOM) where ultrasound education has been formally integrated into the undergraduate medical school curricula. Fellows will have the unique opportunity to learn about ultrasound curriculum development, and now to develop innovative teaching methods for ultrasound integration into the medical school curricula. There is opportunity to participate in the established year round critical care fellow ultrasound training, as well as participating in the development of unique web based ultrasound educational tools using 3-D animation models. We also have formal CME ultrasound courses offered year round through the Henry Ford Hospital Ultrasound University, where fellows can participate as instructors, and also learn about unique aspects of developing an ultrasound course for any group of learners. There is emphasis on advanced cardiac applications and all the other core areas of Point of Care Ultrasound. Fellows will also gain experience in resuscitative transesophageal echocardiography. There are also multiple research opportunities. Fellow has CME funding that can be used to take other US administration courses through ACEP, SAEM or SCUF.
