NYU Medical Center / Bellevue Hospital

Program Description

Type of Program

The Department of Emergency Medicine at NYU Langone Health and Bellevue Hospital Center is a world-renowned leader in academic adult and pediatric emergency medicine. We are excited to offer fellowship training in emergency ultrasonography in this inspiring setting.

In 2022, NYU Langone Health was named the No. 1 Hospital in New York, and No. 3 in the nation, by U.S. News & World Report’s annual “Best Hospitals” Honor Roll. Also in 2022, the NYU Grossman School of Medicine was ranked No. 2 in the nation for research on U.S. News & World Report “Best Graduate Schools” list.

Our clinical sites include NYU Tisch Hospital, NYU Brooklyn Hospital, NYU Cobble Hill, and Bellevue Hospital. NYU Tisch is the main academic site in midtown Manhattan, a state-of-the-art tertiary care facility. NYU Brooklyn is a busy community Level 1 Trauma Center in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. NYU Cobble Hill is a freestanding emergency department that treats adult and pediatric patients. Bellevue Hospital is a public hospital, part of the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation. It is the oldest hospital in the country, with a storied history and an unwavering commitment to public health and service. The hospital takes pride in serving its diverse, and often medically underserved, community. Among all the sites, an incomparable breadth of pathology is seen.

Applicants must have completed or expect to complete an ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency and meet all New York University Grossman School of Medicine credentialing and academic appointment requirements. We accept applications from 3- or 4-year EM programs.

Ultrasound Fellowship Education

This fellowship is a one- or two-year program designed to give graduates of emergency medicine residency the skills and knowledge to become leaders in the field of emergency ultrasound. There are three primary components to the fellowship program:

1. Education: Learning image acquisition and interpretation skills for both basic and advanced emergency and point-of-care ultrasound applications, and developing lecturing and teaching skills by developing an emergency ultrasound scholarship portfolio and contributing to the program’s educational mission. Fellows will be expected to give lectures and lead workshops for medical students, residents, and faculty. Fellows will also receive training in advanced echo, advanced MSK and regional anesthesia.

2. Administration: Understanding the critical components required to run an emergency ultrasound program, and how to best utilize information technologies for image archiving, database management, and quality assurance. Fellows will participate in image QA and division business meetings.

3. Research: Understanding the state of emergency ultrasound research by participating in monthly ultrasound journal club activities, ongoing division research, and developing an independent research project from its inception to publication. Fellows have access to our robust Research Division for support and mentorship during the research process. Fellows are also encouraged to submit and present their original research at national and international conferences.

Interested candidates may have the opportunity to pursue a Master’s degree in Health Professions Education (MHPE) from Maastricht University, a renowned institution that is a leader in the field of medical education.
